Bodice

c.1600 - England

MaterialPlain-weave linen embroidered with metal and silk threads; naturalistic motifs; probably made as a gift for Elizabeth I of England.

Believed to have been a clemency plea gift to the Queen from the Mother of Robert Devereux, and Earl (2nd Earl of Essex) who was executed for treason in 1601. The Devereux Bodice was believed to have had a skirt to match that didn’t survive.

The embroidery motifs - roses, peas, tulips, irises, beans, forget-me-nots, carnations and birds, caterpillars,snakes, spiders and snails are created in silver thread on a linen back.methods of construction of theses motifs lend a 3dimensional affect and are placed within confines of chain-stitched gold thread.
